Pressure Washing your Roof

Did you know those black stains on your roof are called Gloeocapsa Magma? This is a form of algae that feeds on the limestone used in making your asphalt shingles. Wet conditions cause the algae to spread down the rooftop. The black streaking left behind is not only unattractive, but can cause extensive damage in the long run because the shingles are not able to reflect heat as they are supposed to.

It is estimated that 50% of roofs are completly replaced when they have black streaking. Roofing contractors often donâ??t have the knowledge, and some are simply lining their pockets, making a sale on your dirty, but otherwise functional roof. If your shingles are in good shape, the shingles can be cleaned without damage. You wouldnâ??t replace your car because itâ??s dirty, or your siding because it has built up mildew. Algae can be simply removed with low pressure chemical application. Never use a high pressure washing machine, this will shorten the life of your roof.

Shingle manufacturers such as GAF,Owens Corning, and the Asphalt Roofing Manufactures Association all support and recommend low-pressure chemical usage to remove algae from roof tops. As professionals ourselves, we use the very same cleaners that are recommend and finish up with a low pressure rinse with water. Having your roof professionally cleaned can save you a lot of money as you get more our of you existing roof.

While many roof tops can be served with a simple chemical cleaning, there is a shelf life on each and every roof. If your roof is showing signs of aging, not algae build up, it could in fact be time for replacement. Calling a roofing contractor for an opinion on the condition of your roof could prove to be costly if they talk you into a new roof when it doesn't need it. We can provide you with an honest evaluation.
